Bagan is a special place. From the 11th to the 13th century over 10,000 pagodas and temples were built...now over 2,000 still remain.
After 5 decades of army imposed hibernation, Myanmar finally opened up for tourism in 2012. Tourists from around the world were allowed to climb atop the ancient pagodas for views of Bagan’s incredible sunrises. But then in 2016 Bagan experienced a 6.8 magnitude earthquake and the government of Burma closed all access to the top of the Pagodas.
After researching a few blogs from recent Bagan travelers, I read there were still a few Pagodas left with access to the top which I could find on the app maps.me. I spent my first day scootering around the dusty streets of the Bagan in search of these “open” pagodas, only to be disappointed when I found each one was closed.
Luckily, after a full day of searching I ended up meeting a local name Zaw who wanted to share his sunrise with me! He took me to the top of a Pagoda only five minutes away from his village. I’m not a morning person by any means but with sunrises like these...I can definitely an exception.
