At 5057 Fifth Ave.... recalling the grandeur of the French Baroque period, this 21 room Gilded Age mansion was inspired by the Grand Trianon of Versailles. Designed by local architect Paul Irwin, the mansion was built for steel industrialist Andrew Moreland in 1914. Moreland was once one of the original partners of Carnegie Steel. When widowed Moreland remarried, he moved to D.C. permanently with his new wife & sold the mini-palace to Henry P. Hoffstot, a wealthy businessman in 1929. Hoffstot modernized the home to that times conveniences and added a 3 car garage. The last heir dying in 2015, the house has been converted to luxury apartments. This manse, tho smaller, is very similar to another mansion in Newport, RI called ‘Rosecliff’, completed in 1902 for silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrich. At 328 E. Wheeling St....this 17 room QueenAnne was built by the Duncan family, glass manufacturers, in 1892. The matron of the mansion had her newlywed daughter, Amy & her son-in-law, Walter H. Baker, live with her there. The young couple would later inherit the home & Walter would become president of the Universal Steel Co in Washington. When Amy died in 1944, Walter, class of 1907, donated the manse to his alma mater, Jefferson College in memory of his wife. Since then the mansion has been used as the college president’s home. It offers a dream feast for the eyes with all its outrageous details. Oddly I could find very little history on house other than the manse has had several names attached to it when I googled address: Tacon-Barfield-Gordon-Tissington. Tacon always appears first & comments on Tissington mentions this family occupied the mansion the longest. The house appears to still be privately owned. Any other info I welcome . 3/4 views only ... big honking tree in front that would be challenging to cut down! Found vintage photos online of interiors taken in 1933 — staircase & of double-parlors. So a few weeks ago I saw a cute purple house on IG in my brother-in-laws town. Knowing that I wasn't going to keep myself from driving around looking for it, I reached out for the address.(Because you know it's all about making life easier!) So as I was conveniently going out for doughnuts one morning, I made a point of driving by the house to get a photo as the sun was coming up. Isn't it dreamy?! At 1501 Van Ness Ave.... a wedding cake mansard with all the exuberant frilly details which is so distinctly Frisco style! This wonderful #lostmamsion, built in 1876 was originally owned by Senator George Hearst, wealthy businessman, miner, & politician. Hearst was lured to California by the Gold Rush of 1849, starting with a successful mine in 1851. Within 20 yrs, he had several mining operations in 6 western states & one in Peru, becoming the largest private mining firm in the USA. Hearst’s only child, William Randolph Hearst, would grow up to build a business empire of his own in publications. In 1887, George Hearst sold his mansard to Captain Robert R. Thompson, another successful businessman. After making a fortune founding a steamboat company in Oregon, Thompson moved his family to Alameda across the bay from Frisco in 1877. Investing his money in real estate, he also diversified and built a waterworks company to supply city water. Thompson also built an elaborate eclectic gothic mansion in 1880, but ironically lost that mansion to a fire in 1884 due to lack of water pressure from his own waterworks. All the firemen could do was watch with Thompson, as his mansion burned to the ground! Thompson later sold the waterworks to Alameda, and relocated to the Hearst mansion. 20 yrs later, irony would strike him again, when he would lose that mansard in yet another fire in the 1906 earthquake.
