A big part of scientific research is the behind-the-scenes repetitive and extremely boring jobs that need to be done in order to get to the final analysis. (These are the moments I wish I had my own undergrad-ling ). . All I'm doing here is filtering a liquid solution called the mobile phase I use for HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography). This step needs to be done at least 3 times so I can get all the unwanted particles out; it's extremely tedious. . HPLC is a method of separating components of a mixture of analytes (molecules I want to analyse) in a mobile phase according to their size (interaction with a stationary phase). . It's like, I need to get a room full of differently aged people through this long hallway (the stationary phase). All the little kids get through the hallway first and all the older people come out last. I can detect and quantify how many people are in a particular age group because they leave the hallway accordingly. In my case, I'm looking for a particular age group that happen to all be wearing a fluorescent t-shirt... . I've been doing HPLC for a month now and I've only been optimising my protocol, I haven't even started on analysing my samples yet (all 3000 of them ). . Slow progress is still progress. Seu trabalho de mestrado teve como objetivo analisar a presença de resíduos de agrotóxicos em água mineral engarrafada, além de desenvolver um método para que isso fosse feito. . Bárbara utilizou recursos como a Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência (HPLC) acoplado a espectrometria de massas para detecção e quantificação desses compostos, levando em consideração os agrotóxicos mais utilizados na região. . Vale lembrar que o Brasil é o maior consumidor de agrotóxicos no mundo! Segundo relatório do Ministério da Saúde, entre 2007 e 2014 foram notificados quase 70 MIL casos de intoxicação por esses produtos.
