Meet Michael Dickerson. A soft spoken mountain of a man. During the long mountain course laps he started to experience charley horses in his legs. They were so bad he had to use his long bow as a crutch from time to time. As he crossed the finish line the cramps took over his entire lower body and core. Any of us that have had a charly horse knows the type of pain this man was experiencing. With the help of some @wilderness_athlete hydrate and recover Michael was back on his feet some time later. Fast forward to Sunday morning wich was the heavy meat pack. Michael shows up with a severe limp as several of his muscles where strained or possible torn from the extreme cramps the day prior. Remember these cramps just didnt last for minutes but for hours during the event and after the event on Saturday. Michael insisted on finishing the competition so he strapped the 80lb sandbag on his pack and made the two trips up the mountain. All who were watching could feel his pain during every step. People wanted to help but Michael refused the help telling fellow competitor @hollywooddaveoo Jesus suffered a lot more then this carrying his cross for us, I can finish this. Michael received a standing ovation at the awards ceremony when Dave shared this story. Dave also handed him the @mathewsinc Vertix bow he had just won and said you deserve this more then I do. Michael also received the "hanging in there" award. One of only two custom made wooden TTH hangers. Michael taught all of us a lesson on humbleness and mental toughness. Here are your 2019 Train to Hunt Age Group National Champions! David Beronio of Nevada is the overall age group champion coming in 1st in the masters division. Ed Pierick of Wisconsin and Dennis Klomp of California finished the masters podium. In the open division Matthew Wohlwend of Utah took the top of the podium with Travis Preuit of Wyoming coming in 2nd and Kevin Correale of Colorado in 3rd. The mens super master division had some tough men in it. Darren Foster of Oregon earned the 3rd place, Jeff DeGarmo of Wisconsin came in 2nd behind Todd McRae of Colorado who is the mens super master champion. Dennis Manuell of Arizona is your mens senior master champion. His time also earned him 10th overall showing competitors that age is only a number. Here is my backyard training from tonight. I focused more on testing my gear then getting a good "workout". I did not count reps but went to the point where my muscles started to burn or I started to breathe heavy. Things to note, the box was on a slight slope to test my balance and how my pack would feel stepping and jumping off the box. I would draw and shoot from different positions to test my bow grip and torque. I would put my pack on and take it off differently to get a feel for how things shift around. A session like this is a good active recovery workout or workout to do during the last few days before a TTH event. The 4 exercises are stepovers, monkey dumps, log toss and burpee over the head toss. I entered @traintohunt with one competitor in mind: Myself. Considering that 3 months ago was the first time I ran more than 2 miles; was the first time I worked out more than 2 days a week and for more than 2 weeks in a row. I was out of shape mentally and physically. We all have our “why” for competing and I don’t need to explain mine. The people of Train to Hunt are an amazing group be around; some run ultra marathons and Ironmans, and some just found out about the event last week and yet all are humble, open and equal. We are all in this together and there are no losers in this competition. This all would not be possible if it were not for the supporting staff of Train to Hunt, @getfitwithbrian and most of all, my amazing wife @jcwellens for pushing me and keeping me motivated. For me, I won Train to Hunt. Mission accomplished. There's nothing like the feeling of drawing back my bow. When I first started hunting + was mainly using rifles I'd get terrible target panic-shaking hands, knock-knees, the whole bit. But when I drew back + had my arrow pointed at a big game animal for the 1st time I was completely calm + focused. Hundreds of hours of practice + repetition led me to trust the process. I know I'll always get a rush of adrenaline when I'm in position to make a kill but when motions are second nature + your mind can focus on decision making, you've got a lot better chance at making a clean shot.
