Microphones are actually pretty simple when you break it down! Basically, soundwaves push this semi-flexible drum surface called a diaphragm (does anyone else say it die-a-frag-hem in their head) back and forth, and there’s a little coil of wire attached to it that’s sliding back and forth over a magnet. As we know, magnets plus coils of wire equals BOOM induced current/signal of some kind. Then your computer/speaker/microcontroller can do whatever it wants with that signal!

P.S. I want to do some more mechanical drawings too. What do you wish you know about mechanics?
In high school it was extremely easy for me to excel & I graduated high school with my diploma & an associates degree. Then I got to CSU... I hated the course work, didn’t apply myself, & stopped going to class all together.
For the next 3 years I was lost. I changed my major, transferred, worked as much as I could as a server, & attempted to start the journey of taking over my families business. By the time I was 22 I was depressed that I would’ve been done with college if I would’ve stuck with it, & ready to go to cosmetology school but something told me to give it one more try at CSU.
I did things differently this time around. I sat at the front of the class, found tutors, went to study groups, sacrificed my social life & joined student organizations. What came from these changes? I made the deans list, interned at NASA, won 1st place for my team’s senior design project, completed two co-op rotations at a nuclear plant, & created the IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity group for CSU.
Yesterday I graduated from CSU with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, minoring in mathematics. From this journey I have learned a lot but I think these are important:
1. WOMEN, SUPPORT WOMEN. In all aspects of life but especially in STEM. We will never get ahead & make an impact in a male dominated world without working together & encouraging one another. You will never shine brighter by taking away someone else’s shine.
2. You DO NOT need to know what you want to do for the rest of your life at 18. If I could go back I would’ve gotten a full time job, saw what real hard work was, matured & then went college. Instead I wasted money, lost scholarships & ruined my GPA which made it ten times harder to fix afterwards. Everyone’s path is different.
3. If I can get an engineering degree anyone can accomplish anything in this world if you make up your mind & are disciplined enough to see it through. Believe in yourself! ✨
4. Become friends with your peers, it’ll give you a little extra boost to want to go to class & studying with two heads is better than one.
