Fiery-throated Hummingbird is a feisty little thing, and from certain angles you can see its glistening purple/blue crown and a flash of the iridescent rainbow-colour throat patch called gorget, a term used in olden times for the metallic (and later cloth) plate protecting the throat of a knight-in-armour.
Males and females are similar in appearance and inhabit the montane rainforests or cloud forests of Costa Rica. The hummingbird’s intense glint is due to the structure of the feathers, rather than coloured pigments. The bird’s throat feathers contain minutely thin, film-like layers, set like tiles in a mosaic. Light waves reflect and refract off the many layers, creating these iridescent colours. •
