Heidi by Johanna Spyri. I recently finished reading this charming little book in a readalong with @booksinboston and it was very cute! I think it contains a lot of the familar tropes that we see in classics featuring young girls and their adventures. A love of nature (a la Anne of Green Gables) fresh air helping to cure an invalid (the Secret Garden) but Heidi still presented a relatively fresh and exciting take on these themes. I especially liked her time in Frankfurt where she somehow adopts a whole basket of kittens and the silly chapter about ghosts! My one negative about this book is that is a touch TOO preachy and lays on the biblical messages pretty thick at the end. Also, as much as I totally want a life in the mountains just eating cheese and bread, there are some dietary issues there surely! 4 stars. Note to self.... NEVER leave a groundhog in a tote alone in a car for any reason, even for a very short time. Now you know why we named our ambassador groundhog Houdini. He loved eating the potted plant I had just purchased for Mother’s Day. Houdini was being taken to the vets office to have a cyst on his head checked. On the way home I stopped to drop off a package and when I got back and started driving, I looked over and this is what I found! For some reason this tongue twister popped into my head.... Finding a rich slope ensconced with wild hyacinth (Camassia scilloides) always brings a smile to my face. It’s a beautiful plant both individually and in large colonies. I prefer the colloquial term of ‘bear grass’ for this species despite the name being used for other plants, especially out west. The name was popularly used by early settlers and pioneers in the Ohio country and Kentucky Bluegrass regions.
