I love all these quippy little sayings that assume the deep inner workings of the human experience can be reduced to a seemingly simple little platitude or 2 . Don’t feel bad if you’re more complex than that... we all are

Today marks the Celtic feast day of Lughnasdh and our entry into the late summer season. I have always loved this time of year. I love it for its warmth and golden light, but mostly I love it for its poignant beauty. I never feel more aware of the fleeting nature of life then I do in late summer. It is a season of gorgeous impermanence that calls me to both sadness and joy multiple times per day. . . This season also marks the time of year in which my only child was born. This year instead of celebrating her birth with her though I am boarding a plane to go sit with my beloved Nana as she passes from this world. My daughter turns 21 during this season of Lughnasadh and my Nana celebrated her 98th day of birth less than a month ago. At 43 I sit right in the middle of my life, and these two people I love, and I am finding that the sense of tender hearted gratitude that the season of late summer has always evoked in me is becoming more and more familiar to me. . . Watching the children I love grow up while my dear friends age and my elders step closer to the veil I am very aware that each day is precious and tomorrow is never guaranteed. . . This does not make me sad or scared, nor does it make me want to grasp for security or control. Rather it keeps my heart wonderfully raw and open, which is a gift. I will always choose a heart that can hold the paradox of celebration and grief over numbness or denial. Every single time. . . And I wish the same for you. May this golden summer season wake you up to the ephemeral nature of life and of love, and may that remembrance sweeten your heart and bring tears of joy to your eyes. . . #lammas #lughnasadh #grief #celebration #joy #impermanence #lifemagic
