The new Global Terminal at Chicago’s O’Hare International airport will be designed by Studio ORD, which comprises American practices Studio Gang, Solomon Cordwell Buenz, Corgan, Milhouse Engineering and Construction, and STL Architects. The building has a triangular, pronged layout, and will contain 2.25 million square feet (200,000 square metres) of space, while also being an easily navigable, efficient environment for passengers. A glazed roof will allow natural daylight to fill the space, and trees will be planted in the main concourse. The new Global Terminal is expected to break ground in 2023 and complete in 2028 at an estimated cost of USD $2.2 billion. To learn more abut this project, visit TheB1M.com/videos!

Designed by Zaha Hadid in 2015, the Danjiang Bridge, which spans the Tamsui River in Taiwan, is now under construction. It will open to traffic in 2024 and will cost an estimated USD $405 million. When complete, it is supposed to become the world’s longest single-mast, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge, with its longest span being 450 metres. It will not only carry car traffic, but also pedestrians and a light rail line, cutting the current travel time across the river - which currently requires a long detour - by 25 minutes.

Once a rare occurrence, multi-billion-dollar infrastructure schemes have now become the norm as governments around the world strive to keep pace with growth, raise living standards and enable further economic development. Pushing engineering to the limits, impacting billions of people and generating some almost unfathomable statistics, our latest documentary explores the largest infrastructure projects currently under construction on each of the six inhabited continents - now streaming on YouTube and TheB1M.com! #architecture #architecturelovers #infrastructure #engineering #construction #transport #usa #australia #asia #africa #europe #crossrail #beltandroad #china #built

It takes a Columbia civil engineerto mastermind building the largest bridge (3.1 miles) in New York history, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
.
As project director, Jamey Barbas (‘81BC MS’83) took charge of its construction from 14 miles of main span cables, 50 miles of foundation pilings, 300 thousand cubic yards of concrete, and 220 million pounds of U.S. Steel.
.
At our annual Magill Lecture, Barbas discussed the five-year, $3.98 billion undertaking and how her team worked to minimize its environmental impact by installing prefabricated modular components piece by piece, using one of the world’s largest floating cranes.

Chand Baori in the Indian State of Rajasthan consists of 3,500 narrow steps over 13 stories. It extends approximately 30 m (100 ft) into the ground making it one of the deepest and largest stepwells in India.
Chand Baori was intended to conserve as much water as possible. The air at the bottom of the well remains 5-6 degrees cooler than at the surface and Chand Baori was used as a community gathering place for locals during periods of intense heat.
