When I got back into cycling, after a year spent off my bike, I had no idea what to expect. But all that time in the @alamo180 gym doing CrossFit has paid off because I have strength and stamina that has carried over into cycling!

All those squats, deadlifts, air bike intervals, cleans, wall balls, and MORE have given me the strength and stamina I need to ride strong and confident (and not suck)!
CrossFit has also helped me be a strong triathlete and maximize every training hour despite my busy schedule as a mom and small business owner. I can still race triathlons even though I have about 5 hours a week to train!
If you ever think you're too busy to do triathlons, maximize every training minute you have by including CrossFit. I CrossFit 3x per week and swim, bike and run 1x per week and that's perfect for Sprint distance triathlons.

Back in 2011, my company @alamo180 got started. Offering a ton of services because that’s what you do when you start a small business. It’s like throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. We now focus specifically on triathlon and CrossFit.
In 2014, we opened our gym. When the construction was complete and the equipment purchased, we looked upon our gym with pride and love. We didn’t know it then, but we were blinded by passion. It’s a miracle anyone walked in and signed up for our services. I mean, c'mon look at that space We couldn't afford to mat the floor. We didn’t even have a rig. Our friend let us borrow his rig for a year until we could afford to buy one (rig not pictured here). We had the minimum equipment necessary to offer a classes up to 10 people.
When we made money, we saved it, and poured it right back into our gym. It was a slow growth process, but it helped knowing a thing or two about endurance ;) Slowly and surely, our bareboned gym grew.
Do I believe in the power of strength and conditioning? Absolutely! My hubs and I wouldn't have opened a gym if we didn't. Do we believe in the benefits of #crossfit? Yes! We wouldn't have affiliated in 2018 if we didn't. Triathlon becomes next level when you add strength. We know this to be true because we see it as coaches every day!

Alamo 180 CrossFit on a Saturday morning "DORIE” Partner Hero WOD
Hero: Dedicated to WWII hero Doris Miller, of Waco, TX. During the attack in the Pearl Harbor, Doris was asked to assist the captain, who was mortally wounded, to move him to a safer place. After helping the captain, he went back to the battle row and found a gun that was unmanned and went manage it. When asked to abandon ship, Doris was one of the men able to save some of the injured men. Because of his bravery, he was awarded the Navy Cross. Additionally, Doris was entitled to the Purple Heart Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. “This marks the first time in this conflict that such high tribute has been made in the Pacific Fleet to a member of his race and I’m sure that the future will see others similarly honored for brave acts.” – Admiral Chester W. Nimitz
The significance of the workout's format and rep scheme:
- Partner workout because he moved/drug several men to a safer location while the ship was being strafed - including the ships commanding officer who was mortally wounded.
- 150m Partner Carry, 150 Wall Balls, because "15" is in reference to a quote from Dorie as having fired the 50cal deck gun (which he had no training on) for 15 minutes recording at least one enemy kill and possibly up to four
- AMRAP at the end because after moving men during strafing, and after firing the 50 cal at enemy planes for 15 mins, because of his size/athleticism his commanding officer ordered him to save "as many men as possible" from the water as his ship was sinking #CrossFit #IntelligentDesignCrossFit #IDCF #HeroWod #PartnerWod #alamo180 #makea180 #sanantonio
Being kind and gentle to my body. I used to be able to front squat far more than a 35# bar, but this is my current season. It has taken me waaaay too long to come to this realization. I kept believing there was something wrong with me....something wrong with me for not lifting heavier or training harder, but in fact, there is not a thing wrong with me. I'm a mama that is still nursing my little one and still waking up at night. And I'm not the only mama living this life. I've talked with other mamas currently in this season of life, coming out of it, or will soon be entering it.
After talking with our pediatrician this week, and sharing my story of continuing to be gentle to my body, she suggested I share my journey. To use my knowledge and create a training program to help postpartum mamas. To teach them to listen to their bodies. That it's good to still workout, but to change their perspective. She has a point. Our society does a bad job of glorifying new mamas killing it at athletic endeavors. Yes it is amazing you can pop out a baby and haul ass in an endurance race soon after, but is that representative of the general population? This puts false ideas in some mamas' heads and they get frustrated when they can't achieve what they wanted to in their postpartum season. Honestly, I fell into this trap. Our bodies all heal at different paces. We need to honor that process and take care of ourselves. It might mean that you postpone a race or back off the load.
Any mamas interested in a plan specifically for postpartum healing and fitness? To still train, but at a gentler intensity and demand? Our CrossFit program uses periodization. There is a period for load and a period for recovery. During a training cycle, we use progressive load principles to slowly and steadily stimulate the body to adaptation along with active recovery to avoid overtraining, injury and burnout.
Periodization is the opposite of random. For example, you wouldn’t train for a running event, of any distance, by running as hard as you can every day. You would quickly become overtrained, injured and burnt out. Hard workouts are necessary, but so is recovery.
By designing a CrossFit program that includes recovery, we call it training smarter, not harder.
