Lasioglossum or Halictus? My post before last I posted my shot of what I identified as a female Lasioglossum Bee but then I shot this guy in the same area which looks like a male Halictus Bee but at closer look could be a male Lasioglossum. These bees look VERY similar and the features are hard to tell apart. There are features on the body and the wings that are conflicting and making a positive ID difficult. The experts call this miniscule jumper Pystira Ephippigera. I call it adorable. One of my first encounters on my recent equatorial escape.

Why do ants bump into each other? This bumping is called Trophallaxis. Shown here is Trophallaxis in Camponotus sp. Trophallaxis is the process of exchange of regurgitated fluids in b/w adult ants or adult with their larvae. It also happens in other insects such as bees, wasps, termites, etc. This isn't the only reason why they bump into each other. One of the other reasons is that they "Smell" each other, or sense each other ro make sure that they belong to the same colony. If an ant is sensed to not be their own, it will be swarmed and killed. The more you know! This shot is one of my favourites, and I took this last night by chance. Trophallaxis only lasts about a second usually and I had a small small window to get the focus right and shoot with the flash diffuser set in the right place by my brother. I wanted to get this shot for a long time and this was the only single shot that I got. The ants stood in such a place where I could rest the lens directly on the tree trunk and get the focus right. When shooting macro, try to get as low as you can, if you're on their eye level the shot usually looks much better and becomes appealing and easier to compose. Shooting from above may hide some interesting mouth parts of your subject.
