It took a car rental, way too many highway tolls, and a lot of milk tea to get here, but it was so worth it ✨

We stayed in this traditional ryokan hotel in the middle of absolute nowhere, on an island, and deep in the mountains. These hot springs can be accessed by visitors, but staying here allowed us a sunrise dip with no one else in sight. The water ran right from the mountains, into the onsen and then down the stream. It was opaque with minerals, silky to the touch (for real), and the perfect temperature for a long soak. Pretty magical ✨

From Takamatsu, a laid-back city that lies along the shore of Japan’s Inland Sea, you can make your way into the Iya Valley: a series of mountains and gorges that are reminiscent of a verdant Grand Canyon. In the 12th century this secluded area of dramatic natural scenery was a hideout for warring clans. The farther west you go into the valley, the more uninhabited it becomes. Trees, their leaves just starting to turn from green to yellow, hang over the river that flows through the valley. Vine bridges wobble unnervingly over the terraced hillside. To read our correspondent’s impressions from her trip to this valley, and the serene sea neighbouring it, follow the link in our bio. Image: Getty #inlandsea #japan #travel #calm #islands #iyavalley
Whats your favorite hidden gem?
Iya Valley, Japan
Iya Valley (祖谷渓) is known for it's amazing bridges made of vines. The Otto no Hashi stretches 44 meters, while the Tsuma no Hashi spans a beautiful 22 meters. Nearby, you will find Wild Monkey Bridge pictured above, that is known for transporting goods and people across the river.

One of the must-see spot in #iyavalley that you cannot be missed is this overwhelming landcape carved by rich nature. This photo is taken from the "SHIKOKU MANNAKA SENNEN MONOGATARI", sightseeing train connecting between Kotohira and Oboke.

Looking for some adrenaline pumping fun in the Iya Valley? Why not try white water rafting on the Yoshinogawa? Generally considered the best rafting in Japan, smashing through the rapids is sure to get your heart rate up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The scenery around you is stunning as you make your way through Oboke Gorge. It really gives you a whole new perspective on this amazing area.
We had an absolute blast and would highly recommend adding it to your itinerary when visiting the Iya Valley. Thanks @raftingtops13 for being such great guides and for the photo! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
