Šurany's synagogue was built in 1916 in an architectural style that employs an eclectic mix of Gothic, Art Nouveau and Moorish elements – a mix that is vividly displayed on the decorative facade. After World War II the building was used for a time as a school. It now houses the Šurany Municipal Museum and has been open to the public since 2005. The museum has its permanent exhibition in the women’s gallery. One of the Museum's most precious exhibits is a fragment of a Torah scroll that was hidden for decades in the synagogue attic. The sanctuary is used for concerts and other cultural events. The building has been undergoing gradual restoration since the late 1980s. Its most interesting interior decorative features are the paintings using Star of David and pomegranate motifs that cover the steel-concrete cassette ceiling. Trencin snyagogue The Jewish population of the city was around 2000 members. In 1913, the Jewish community built the building on the site of a previous wooden synagogue from 1781. In 1941, it was damaged by the Slovak Hlinka Guard. After the war, the building became property of the state and was used as a storage facility. Jews from the city prayed in a room nearby. It was renovated at the end of the 70's and is now a cultural center. The snyagogue architectural design by Berlin architect Dr. Richard Scheibner. It was built by the Fuchs and Niegreisz, the construction firm of Trenčín. The historic building with Byzantine and Maur-Oriental elements stands at the northern corner of the Ľudovít Štúr Square. The Synagogue was used for neology purposes until the 2nd World War, during which it was desecrated and its articles taken. Reconstruction of the monument took place from 1974 -1984. After the reconstruction, the central space under the dome has served as an exhibition hall. A small worship room in the rear of the facility was restored in 1990. In the interior there is retained original blue dome with a rich chandelier and colorful window skylights with ornamental and plant motifs. The small worship room is situated at the back of the building. After renovation, central area of the building serves as an occasional showroom.
