Dona de la tribu dels Yao als camps d'arros de Longji Un dels grups reconeguts com una nacionalitat que componen tant la Xina com Vietnam són els Yao ( yáozú瑶族) o Dao . L'ètnia Yao es caracteritza per estar formada per diversos grups molt dispersos pel sud-est asiàtic, amb una immensa varietat de manifestacions culturals i lingüístiques molt diferents entre si. Com veurem, algunes diferències són tan evidents que en xinès s'anteposa un terme que especifiqui el grup Yao a què ens referim. El caràcter xinès per referir-se a aquest grup ha anat canviant amb el temps. Va ser el 1949 quan es va establir el radical esquerra de jade ( 玉) del caràcter per eliminar qualsevol matís despectiu que tenia en el passat , ja que des de la dinastia Tang s'usava en els registres històrics el caràcter yao (猺) amb el radical esquerra de "animal" (犭) per referir-se als Yao i altres pobles no-xinesos del sud que es van oposar amb més resistència al domini dinàstic xinès. L'agricultura sempre ha jugat un paper central en la majoria de terres on els Yao viuen. Encara que molts s'han mudat a ciutats i porten un estil de vida no gaire diferent al de la resta de xinesos o europeus, en les zones rurals segueix dominant un estil de vida basat en l'economia autosuficient , els comerços familiars, la indústria de l'artesania i la silvicultura.
