Jose Badia’s ‘A Violin for the Guardian Angel’ is part of the NSU Art Museum’s Collection and it’s now on display as part of the 60th Anniversary Exhibition: ‘Remember to React’. This mixed media installation is inspired on ‘the Afro-Cuban tradition of offering music to the guardian angel’. In this work the angel is this enormous silhouette looming over the black figure that has a violin on one of his shoulders. The original tradition would be to use a drum, instead of a violin, which was an incorporation of Cuban practitioners of the Yoruba and Congo religions, that had been trained in Classical Music.
