In this second installment at the Battle of Kadesh scenes on the west face (back) of the pylon of the Ramesseum ("mortuary" temple of Ramesses II), I discuss how Ramesses II continues to march on Kadesh, lured into complacency by two Bedouin spies, who claim the Hittites are cowering near Aleppo in Syria. Ramesses II pushes forward to Kadesh with a quarter of his force, leaving the other elements behind. As Ramesses sets up camp almost in the shadow of Kadesh, an Egyptian patrol brings in two Hittite spies who, upon a more extreme interrogation than the apparently simple questioning of the bedouin, reveal that the Hittites are actually on the other side of Kadesh. For those not familiar with Kadesh, the most famous example of a stratagem of deceit from the ancient world may be the Trojan Horse, a "gift" to the city of Troy left by retreating Greeks, actually filled with Greek soldiers. After the Trojans spend a night of riotous drinking and revelry around the Horse, the Greek soldiers leap out and take the city. In a similar but earlier plot line from ca. 1450 BCE, Egyptians who are besieging the city of Joppa send baskets of tribute, ostensibly signalling an Egyptian surrender. Once inside Joppa, Egyptian soldiers hiding within the "tribute baskets" jump our and take the citizens of Joppa hostage (some to be sent back to Egypt to work at temples). The diplomatic machinations of Akhenaton and his contemporaries established a more or less balanced situation in the area of modern Lebanon and coastal Syria, but east of the Orontes river, where desert tracks ultimately connected the region of Damascus with the area of modern Jordan, the situation was more fluid (John and I discussed much of this in our 2007 book Tutankhamun's Armies). In late May of 1274 B.C.E., during his fifth regnal year, Ramesses II approached Kadesh on the Orontes with four divisions, strung out in a roughly south to north line—the young ruler appears to have wanted to force a resolution of the eastern corridor. South of Kadesh two bedouin reported that the Hittites waited at Aleppo, to the north, and Ramesses and the army of Amun advanced to camp northwest of Kadesh, leaving the other three divisions. Two captured Hittites then informed Ramesses that the Hittites were behind Kadesh. At almost the same time, the Hittite ruler Muwatallish sent 2,500 chariots across the Orontes, scattering the second Egyptian army (Pre) and attacking Ramesses’ camp. As he realizes the danger of his situation, perhaps privately as annoyed with himself as textually he is annoyed with elements of his army, Ramesses suddenly looks beyond the fray. In an important example of the personal piety that is finding overt textual expression already by the reign of Amenhotep II (see the Prayer of Pahu in John's Theban Desert Road Survey II volume, available for download at his academia.edu site), Ramesses pauses before his furious charge into the Hittite horde, and addresses the god Amun. Describing his piety and his architectural donations to god's cult, Ramesses calls upon Amun for help, calling on the god to fulfill the contract between worshiper and divinity. From the Mortuary Temple of Ramesses II, the Ramesseum, Relief of the Battle of Kadesh between Egyptians led by Ramesses II and the Hittites led by Muwattali dated around 1274 BCE. On the right are Egyptian forces, soldiers with their spears, all very orderly and the left the chaotic scene being fought with the Hittites in Kadesh on the Orontes River. The relief is exposed to the elements and is not in fantastic condition. You can still see a vague touch of paintwork in the river scene.
