I don’t think I’ve talked about Khari block printing here before, so here goes. This art form that is unique to Rajasthan uses the dust from precious metals such as gold and silver, to be pressed into outlines and highlights in block printing. These days however I doubt precious metal dust is used, and it’s likely some sort of synthetic compound that glitters. Proper vintage Khari print however is delightfully kitschy; this is a surface print and not something that is visible on the other side of the fabric. You’ll notice how the Khari print on my Kota Doria #sareeoftheday catches the light in parts, and that’s the hallmark of proper precious metal dust versus stick on glitter. I understand that the process of applying Khari print is kind of like making murukku; a paste mixed with the metal dust is pushed out through a mould, to line up with the block printed patterns that require an outline. As you can imagine, this process is laborious and tedious, but results in a Saree that is really unlike any other. (EDIT: Excellent point made in the comments below, although my heart goes out to her damaged Saree Khari Print DOES NOT fare well with dry cleaning, a gentle hand wash is the best) Still, this to me, is the perfect block printed drape to end my weekly theme, and to neatly move onto the Sarees of Rajasthan.
