At No.5️⃣ is this breathtakingly beautiful image by @dylanroyalwildlife - pure paradise! The north of Kruger, known as Pafuri, is stunningly beautiful and encountering familiar wildlife like this huge elephant takes on a whole new enchanted feeling. The alluvial plains around the Luvuvhu River enjoy a tropical microclimate and host magical fever tree forests. Historically, European explorers thought that the vivid green and yellow bark of these trees was the cause of malaria, and the name ‘fever tree’ was given to them, although we now know better. The historical sites like Crooks’ Corner and Thulamela near here add further to the feeling of being somewhere very special and it’s one of our favourite areas of Kruger National Park.

At No.3️⃣ is this most classic of bush safari scenes by @readysetsafari! Zebra and giraffe are both hugely interesting herbivores. The striped pattern of zebra is unique to each individual, much like a human fingerprint. The purpose of the stripes has been debated for years. The idea that it makes individuals difficult to see within the herd and protects against predators is interesting but animals that display this kind of ‘crypsis’ are usually quiet and inclined to hide as well, whereas zebra are noisy, frequently traverse open terrain and herd quite loosely which rather negates the theory. Other explanations for the stripes include social recognition between individuals, heat regulation and some experimental evidence that suggests that biting flies are confused by the markings and discouraged from attacking. The search for definitive answers continues!

Northern Avoca Male
I recently hosted a solo traveler from the USA on one of my big cat Safaris. We had seen leopards, lionesses but we were missing a lion, the king of the Jungle or should I say Savanah.
We were incredibly lucky to find one of the Avoca males at night and what a beautiful Sighting he gave us. He even gave us a thundering road. Goosebump moment when you feel your land cruiser vibrating for the raod of the lion.
It's always a privilege to be able to lions in the wild but their numbers over the years have dropped to less that 20 000 in the wild. Habitat degradation being the primary cause of the decline. Today we need more organisations that work to reverse this by acquiring more land and help in research in the wild. One of those organizations is the @kevinrichardsonfoundation
Feel free to visit their website https://kevinrichardsonfoundation.org/ and see for yourself how they are helping out wild lion populations.

Featuring today: “Zazu”
Since the remake of the Lion King movie came out last week, I thought I’d dedicate this week to post some of my pictures with animals matching the Lion King “cast”.

“I was driving a dirt road near Lower Sabie super slow, looking at trees with cavities in search of owls. They like using them as nests.
I drove past this tree, and I saw something move. So I stopped, reversed and then I saw those beautiful eyes ” This was #tingedby Nick Mathios and what incredible luck to spot a nest of barn owls! Owls that aren’t so common in the Kruger.
