Saying it again for the people in the back. Story below.
.
Jeffries 1070 – Ipse Dixit has been able to confirm, early this morning, that the student who prefaced their comments with “echoing that” during your mutual seminar late last week was, in fact, merely saying the same thing you said, but louder.
“When Malcolm [Rivard] started with ‘echoing that,’ I thought he was going to be, you know, building off my comment,” said 2L Brenda McMurray. “But after he finished, I realized he just said the same exact thing I had just said, but louder.
Initial reports were unclear if Rivard had merely not heard Ms. McMurray’s earlier comments, or if had lost track of his own thoughts and found himself merely repeating what he had just heard.
“I saw Malcolm raise his hand with a comment before Brenda was called on, so my guess,” Bobby Fears, 3L and close associate of Rivard’s, reported, “is that he was already going to say something like that, and choked.”
Fears additionally speculates that Rivard simply thinks that “echoing that” literally means repeating what other people say, louder and in a more kind of dispersed way, as though that were a useful thing to do in a class of 14 people.
Other students, however, insist that this ongoing phenomenon is not confided to Rivard, but is a latent sexist microaggression found in many male-dominated spaces. Rivard, for his part, rejects this latter hypothesis.
“I resent the people saying that my ‘echoing’ comments are the result of a patriarchal upbringing that put insufficient weight on the opinions or contributions of female voices,” Rivard told Ipse Dixit. “The remnants of which caused me to even-unintentionally disregard Brenda.”
“When really, I spent the entire time she was speaking trying to figure out how to say what I was gonna say myself. This is better somehow.”
