Today we let the bikes have a rest, instead we decided to do an enormous walk through a section of the Larapinta Trail, with pretty much no ‘long’ walking fitness. The Larapinta Trail is an extended bush walking track. Its total length covers 223 kilometres from east to west, with the eastern end starting at the Telegraph Station, Alice Springs, and the western end finishing at Mount Sonder, one of the Northern Territories highest mountains. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time to complete the whole trail, so instead we decided to knock out the first section over a day. With a 4am alarm to get moving early, Jesse and I set off to walk out to Simpsons Gap. Simpsons Gap is the trailhead end for section one of the Larapinta Trail. We were walking it in reverse back to to Alice Springs. With nowhere near enough coffee we made the 22 kilometre hike out to Flynns Grave, then along the bike path to Simpsons Gap. We then fuelled up on, you guessed it, PB&J sandwiches, and started the 24 km trek back to Alice Springs. This first section of trail weaves around and over parts of the beautiful, rocky and weathered West MacDonnells ranges. The hills are covered in scrub and ghost gums, and every kind of rock you can imagine. There are water tanks on the trail that are filled regularly by rangers, plus a couple of waterholes as a back up. The highlight was definitely Euro Ridge, which is about halfway. This section of trail takes you right up and onto the edge of a section of the MacDonnell ranges, giving you a view forever over Alice, and Mount Gillen on the opposite side. We finished the trail at the Telegraph Station where we made a mistake sitting down for a coffee at the shop there. The walk back to where we were staying was now wobbly, and our feet were trashed and starting to swell. All up we walked a little over 53 kilometres today. So now it’s feet up, beers, and a curry for dinner. Doing totally dumb stuff without adequate training is totally worth it. Who knows if we will ever be here again? 400 grams. That’s the weight of my moleskin drawing book, watercolours and pens. That’s also about the weight of 4 dehydrated dinners. On long self supported walks weight counts for a lot. So perhaps one could say the drawing tools are an unessessary burden - an extravagance, but I did draw every afternoon and in the tent at night. My legs walked over 160 kms. Anyone else here have chronic blister issues? No matter what I do, the mechanics of my feet are against me when I'm carrying a heavy hiking pack over long distances.⠀ ⠀ It's obviously really painful, but more than that it's tiring. Mentally exhausting.⠀ ⠀ But it's taught me something that I guess most people learn at some point while they're long-distance hiking (or just doing life in general I guess).⠀ ⠀ Impermanence.⠀ ⠀ The idea that "nothing endures but change".⠀ ⠀ The only thing we can really rely on in life, is that we'll never have the same moment twice. That pain passes, no matter how acute or overwhelming.⠀ ⠀ So, I patch up my toes, drink my electrolytes and keep on plodding.
