Lady Hexham (nee Crawley) and Lord Hexham
Status: married

Lady Hexham (who for many years we’ve known as Lady Edith Crawley) is the middle of the Crawley sisters who for many years seems to have all the bad luck (until Sybil dies and Mary’s husband dies too, that is). Her first lover, Patrick Crawley (who was engaged to Mary) died on the Titanic in 1912, and in Spring, 1920, Sir Anthony Strallan jilted her at the altar because he felt he was too old for her (he was at least as old as Lord Grantham). Then, in 1922 Edith has a wild love affair with her editor, Micheal Gregson, who is married but never sees his wife due to the fact she is in an asylum. Unfortunately due to English laws, he cannot divorce his changed wife so travels to Germany where he will be able to do so. This however, results in him becoming missing and years later we discover he was killed the Nazis. Sadly, during this time Edith discovers she is pregnant and confides in her Aunt Rosamund, who takes her to Switzerland to have the baby. Finding she cannot let her daughter go, she and a tenant farmer, Mr. Drew, devise a plan and Marigold (Edith’s now toddler-aged daughter) goes to live on the farm with the Drews. Soon Edith realises she cannot keep away and takes Marigold back, which results in horror from her Aunt and grandmother (who now knows also) and Mrs. Drew, who struggles to let Marigold go and takes her on occasion (which thankfully results in no harm). Aunt Rosamund and the Dowager decide Marigold should be sent to foreign lands. Hearing this Edith decides there is only one option: leave. When all the family but Tom are out she tells Tom she is leaving and that “Know that if I did talk to anyone, it would be you”. Tom at first tries to get her to talk to him, but realises all he can do is help her leave. So Edith flees to London, taking Marigold with her, but then Cora finds out about Marigold and goes to talk to Edith. She manages to persuade Edith to come home and promises Marigold can live at Downton. All seems well, but soon we start to see the other family members begin to guess: first Robert, who sees the likeness to Micheal, and then Tom, who (cont in comments)
