Alright so you get to the gym: now what? Choosing exercises to perform at random is not your best bet. Believe it or not, there actually is a science to which exercises to perform first.

You only have so much energy before your muscles and body become fatigued. Fatigue means proper form could be compromised, which could mean injuries. So you want to make sure you work out in an order that will give you maximal work with good form for the energy you have.

After you warm up,

Perform power/plyometric exercises before strength exercises, meaning power cleans, snatches, squat jumps, kettlebell swings, etc. come before everything else since they require the most energy and proper technique is essential.

Perform big, compound movements before small, single-joint movements. Think squats, deadlifts, etc. before hamstring curls, leg extension, calf raises.

Make sure to hit all the major muscle groups (swipe to see image). This means working opposing muscle groups, like biceps and triceps, quads and hamstrings etc. so you stay balanced. Now, this can be split up between workouts. For example, a chest and arms/back and core/leg day split would hit all the major muscle groups over the course of 3 workouts.

Choose variety: certain exercises will work only part of a muscle group. Changing up your exercises each week will allow you to strengthen all parts of the muscle group. For example, a military press, lateral row, frontal row, and upright row will all work your shoulder (deltoid) muscles but each will work a slightly different portion.
