17.5 This is the International Day Against Homophobia. Some people are under the assumption that we’re in some upward climb towards progress and tolerance. We’re not. The fight for human rights for the LGBT community is a seesaw tug-o-war and the rights won can be and are lost daily all around the world. Trans rights were and continue to be under attack in the US. Last year in France the assaults on members of the LGBT community went up by a 66 precent. We still live in a world where just being gay is punished with death penalty in several countries. Equality isn’t here. We’re not done. So what can you do to be the change? 1. Speak up when you’re in a situation where homophobic comments happen. I’ve been in several work situations where I hear slur words being used as part of a joke. There is NO middle ground here. When you say nothing you’re already taking a side. We notice when you don’t say anything. We just want to be part of the group like everyone else. Being silent when you’re in a situation where this kind of language happens is a choice. Make the right choice. 2.Please don’t assume everyone is straight. We don’t want to be “coming out” all the time to interrupt the conversation. Don’t assume I have a girlfriend or that I’m going to be a father. Often these assumptions get painted on me in a side sentence and it’s always a uncomfortable to correct these people. Not correcting feels even worse. It feels like lying. 3.If you’re not sure about someone’s gender identity or the pronouns they like to be addressed with, be polite and just ask don’t roll the dice and guess. If you’re a teacher don’t point at people and say “you girl in the green dress”. I’ve done this mistake but later came to realise that doing so is boxing people into my own assumptions about them that might be hurtful or even a form of public shaming in a school setting. Ask. It’s not that hard. And finally this is to all the LGBT people out there: If you can and if it’s safe in the community you are in. Be out. Visibility matters.
