It was a great day full of warm words of support. It’s been my pleasure @edinve_warsaw to participate actively in such an amazing conference on ethics in veterinary medicine. ⚕️It was the first time in Poland we touched a delicate and controversial topic of animal euthanasia - the moral and ethical issues we face, the impact it has on both pet owners and veterinarians and the gold standard of performance. There is nothing you can find about it in school syllabus. I am privileged and deeply moved by the reactions of the audience. I respect the tears I’ve seen today. Thank you for many questions and huge interest in my work. It was an honor to be between two other amazing panelists - Vicky Bond and Jenni Nellist from the UK. Thank you to my Alma Mater @sggw_wuls for giving a chance to represent you in the best way And I am honored I had a chance to express my thoughts on battling depression in the past and empower students facing same mental issues I did while being in vet school. We are one beautiful community and @edinve_warsaw is one of its kind in having the energy and courage to touch very difficult and essential topics not being discussed enough. I love you guys My presentation will be available soon in the pdf format as well as podcast I recorded especially for those who could not have attended Stay tuned!!! I thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Waters’s Fingersmith - my first Waters novel. It was a fun text to give a lecture on as well, as it meant rereading (and reading for the first time) a lot of queer theory, and talking about how Waters playfully and provocatively rewrites the Victorian novel, with women’s lives and concerns very much at the forefront.
She’s a great storyteller and her characterisation of Sue is particularly strong; you can’t help but warm to her. I also really liked the exploration of class and, as a Londoner, the depiction of my hometown in the Victorian era. Suffice to say that Borough has changed a fair amount...definitely no hipster coffee shops and overpriced cheese stalls in Sue’s day.
I think my main criticism is that it did feel too long - at over 550 pages and with such long chapters, I found that it began to drag, even though the plot has so many twists and turns. And I suppose a less generous reader might also have quibbled with some of the coincidences and melodrama. Nonetheless, overall it’s a thoroughly enjoyable novel and I’ll definitely read more of Waters’s work. According to @jjoongie, @half_book_and_co and @hamicraggs, I need to read Tipping the Velvet next!

✨I won Three Minute Thesis (3MT)✨!
▫️⠀⠀⠀
This week has been quite the week, to say the least. Thank you for following along in all of my 3MT buzz for the past few days. For those of you who don’t know, Three minute thesis (3MT) is a national recognized competition, originating from Queensland Australia, for graduate students (MSc and PhD) to present their research in 3 minutes or less.
▫️⠀⠀⠀
As graduate students, we probably have over 2+ years’ worth of results, 100 page research proposals, and data that we couldn’t even begin to explain to the average person. Yet, the purpose of this competition is to simplify our research into essentially a 3 minute elevator pitch. The ability to explain complex topics using simple language is a skill that allows you to reach a broader audience with your research and its impact. This is exactly why I love SciComm on Instagram, it allows me to simplify complex scientific concepts to a level where the majority can understand.
▫️⠀⠀⠀
Of course, I had a ton of support along the way, though multiple coaching sessions with @uoitgradstudies . All of which allowed me to refine my talk and abilities as a presenter☝. I am super honored to have won this completion @uoit and I am proud to represent my Institution at the provincial competition taking place @mcmasteru on April 17th ! Congratulations to @elysabeth_roy on runner up, and @nadialas on people’s choice, you girls killed it! Not to mention both of these ladies are in science #WomenInSTEM ♀️!
▫️⠀⠀⠀
Keep an eye out for the full video of my talk, I will be posting the link soon. Now, I’d like to end this with one of my favorite Albert Einstein quotes:
▫️⠀⠀⠀
“If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough” – Albert Einstein.
