Curling papers and coffee. Liotard’s The Lavergne Family Breakfast, 1754, a new loan to the National Gallery. Swipe for details: the sheet of music with Liotard’s name on it poking out from the drawer; the wonderful scumbling of dark blood red over pale pink he uses to portray the sheen of the mother’s dress; and the two pins holding the lace apron to the front of that dress.
The most beautiful pastel ever seen.

Portrait of Jacob Tronchin (1717-1801) by Pierre Louis Bouvier (1766-1836), signed Bouvier ft / 1801. Painted in watercolour on ivory and set in a root veneered wood frame. Nationalmusrum aquired it from the Pohl-Ströher collection sale at Sotheby’s London in December 2018. From the catalogue; ”a member of an illustrious and influential Genevan family, Jacob Tronchin was closely linked with Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789). Liotard completed portraits of no fewer than eight members of the Tronchin family, including Jacob’s brother, the financier and art collector, Francois Tronchin. (...) The present miniature was painted in 1801 and shows the sitter as an 84 year old man.”
It’s a stunning portrait, leaving me without words. Condition-wise it is ever so slightly warped along the lower edge, and it has suffered some questionable restoration in one corner, but it is stable. More to come further on, if and when it will be opened up. .

Fu un’illuminazione mistica, un rapimento immediato dei sensi. Mi lasciai sequestrare dal vento caldo del Bosforo, dai canti primitivi delle moschee, dall’odore rampicante di spezie che arrivava fin dentro le finestre dei palazzi delle ambasciate...Il profilo delle bifore che dividevano lo sguardo fra Oriente ed Occidente. Io scelsi l’Oriente, trascorsi a Costantinopoli 5 anni della mia vita. I più belli! Io svizzero di Ginevra, Jean Etienne Liotard, diventai “il pittore turco”, celebre per la luce dei miei pastelli. Al mio ritorno, gli accademici di Occidente mi beffeggiavano: “è arrivato il turco!”, dicevano. Ero buffo! per loro che in vita non avevano visto che Notre-Dame de Paris...Ridevano della mia lunga barba, incolta come i miei giorni, del mio copricapo di pelliccia. Ho amato l’esotico, il fascino lascivo della vita, languido e carezzevole. Perché i luoghi non sono quelli in cui nasci, ma quelli in cui l’anima alberga e sogna.”
E N G: "I arrived in Constantinople at sunset. From Vienna...after an exhausting journey along the Balkan route. It was 1739. It was a mystical illumination, an immediate rapture of senses. I let the warm Bosphorus wind catch me along with the primitive songs from the mosques, the creeping scent of spices reaching the windows of the embassies’ palaces...The profile of the mullioned windows dividing the gaze between East and West. I chose the East and spent 5 years of my life in Constantinople. The most beautiful ones! A Swiss from Geneva, I, Jean Etienne Liotard, became "the Turkish painter", famous for the light of my pastels. On my return, West scholars mocked me: "the Turk has come!", they said. To them I was odd! To them that in their lives had not seen anything else but Notre-Dame de Paris...They laughed at my long beard, as unkempt as my days; at my fur hat. I loved the exotic, the lascivious charm of life, languid and caressing. Because places are not the ones where you were born, but those where the soul dwells and dreams."
