Paxton House, Berwickshire was built by John and James Adam between 1757-63 for Patrick Home (1728-1809). Apparently the young laird wished to impress Sophie de Brandt, a lady in waiting at the Court of Frederick the Great who he had met on his grand tour. Although Home's relationship with de Brandt did not progress to marriage, Paxton was to remain in the hands of the Homes of Wedderburn until 1988 when it was handed over to a trust.
