All over Lofoten you’ll find these vibrant red fisherman’s cabins, or rorbuer, as they’re called in Norwegian. While many of these cabins have been converted into cozy accommodation for visitors, these cabins are symbolic of Lofoten and are full of history.
↠
The first Rorbu cabins in Lofoten were commissioned by King Øystein in 1120 to serve as housing for the fishermen who would come from all over Norway for the Lofoten fishing season, the world’s biggest annual cod fishing event. Before these cabins were built, the fisherman slept under their boats. The cabins were super basic and made up of two rooms: a storage room for fishing gear and a living room with beds. At times, the cabins were crowded, with two or three men sleeping head to toe in the same bed!
↠
The name, rorbuer is made up of a couple of different words. “Bu” is a Norwegian word for a (little) house, and has clear links to the verb “bo”, to live. However, “bu” is also used in other contexts such as “redskabpsbu”, which is the Norwegian word for a shack where tools are kept.
↠
The first part of the word “rorbu” stems from the Norwegian word “ro”, to row. For centuries, fishermen travelled to the area in their rowing boats – it was not until the nineteenth century that motors were added to fishing boats. In the early years, people literally “rowed fish”. Even after three generations of motorboats, the Norwegian’s still speak of “ro fiske” (row fish) to refer to participating in a fishing expedition. So, it seems likely that “Rorbu” means, “the house where fishermen lived while they rowed fish”.

I've been spending my last weeks living in Lofoten driving up and down the coast following the orcas, waiting for them to come into the fjord. Once they finally did, I had my swimming shorts ready. We were sitting in silence watching as the pod seemed to be resting together after feeding earlier. After a while, they slowly started moving towards us, I jumped into the water as they glided past and watched them swim underneath. I thought these beautiful orcas were big, but once I was in the water the size of them compared to me was insane
