Hey everyone! My name is Egle and tomorrow is day one of #ALOboutyou yoga challenge. And the questions we have for you are : How did you start yoga and what is the earliest pose that you remember learning? ⠀⠀ My yoga journey started unexpectedly- like most of us I guess. I suffered from a knee injury when I was 14, which left me unable to walk for a long period of time. It was a slow healing process but I couldn’t recommend yoga enough to anyone – it has changed my life! ⠀⠀ I slowly started with Bikram yoga when I was in university. It was my dad who pointed me towards yoga actually- he read in the paper that Bikram yoga is very good for everyone but particularly for people who have had injuries. I went to my first Bikram class when I was in the 3rd year of university. It was a very slow start but, little by little, I started to see progress. ⠀⠀ My regular practice started two years ago and I have never looked back. My knee still hurts sometimes, but it is a part of me now. It shaped my personality and I guess it made me more determined. Since I found yoga, I have never felt better. I want to become a yoga teacher one day. Toe taps for press handstand . . These are great to work on if you’re trying to work towards floating up to your handstand. They’re something I’ve worked on for a while . . Here’s what to do:. . 1. Start with a forward fold- Good hamstring flexibility is definitely a must for press handstand. Try to hollow out the belly here, drawing your navel to your spine. Pull up on the big toes as you press them down and engage your thighs. Try to close off the space between your torso and your thighs- always aiming for more compression. But work within your range! Don’t injure your hamstrings. . 2. A couple of blocks under your hands should help you out a bit. You want to think of pressing all your weight down into your hands, rounding your back, drawing your belly towards your spine, becoming light on your feet and sucking your legs in towards your body. . 3. From there, try to tap your toes towards your wrist. Keep your legs straight- don’t bend the knees to do this! Only go as far towards your wrist as you can with straight legs. Maybe try 4 times either side to start. . 4. From there your next challenge is to see if you can step your toes onto your wrists and hold. . This is all super tough- don’t worry if it feels impossible! Give it a go if press handstand is something you want to work on. . #ekapadakoundinyasana2 (flying splits) to #astavakrasana (eight angle pose) . . A fun and tricky transition to try if you love arm balances. You’ll be feeling those hip flexors . . Lift the chest and straighten the arms a bit to bring the leg through and to send it back. Also, the leg comes through and goes back at a bit of a diagonal (you can see my right knee pulls through to the right and not straight through centre), this helps to make space for it.
