Nozzano Castle is a small medieval castle in Toscana, Italy. It was built on an isolated hill back in the times of the Republic of Lucca that was competing with its rival Pisa for more control. The castle was a key stronghold and one of the most modern by medieval standards. It was seized and destroyed several times and renovated in the 14th century. Picture courtesy @maxlazzi_2 . . Voor deze foto heb ik met trillende knietjes van de hoogtevrees vijf verdiepingen aan open trappen beklommen in 33 graden terwijl het zweet uit alle holtes van mijn lijf klotste, om er vervolgens bovenin de klokkentoren achter te komen dat er voor de veiligheid van top tot teen ijzeren veiligheidsrasters hangen! Weg foto-momentje. En dan stond daarvóór ook nog eens, om onverklaarbare redenen, een hek? Maar ehh, daarvoor heb ik niet net al die trappen beklommen in die bloedhitte... ‍♀️ En dus begon een komische act die verdacht veel weghad van een mislukte auditie voor Cirque du Soleil. Met telefoon in de hand balanceerde ik over het hekje, met als doel mijn telefoon zo dicht mogelijk tegen het raster aan te kunnen drukken voor een foto. Achter me: mijn vriend die als tegengewicht tegen mijn rug duwde om te voorkomen dat ik er weer terug af zou vallen. Zo charmant allemaal, echt. Godzijdank was er niemand om onze gefaalde dubbelact te bewonderen. Maar ja, dan heb je wel deze foto van het prachtige, waanzinnige, dromerige Lucca. Lucca’s Guinigi Tower is crowned by seven holm oaks, proof of its regal status within the Comune. It is named after the powerful family of merchants and bankers that had it built in the 15th century, as a symbol of municipal rebirth and an emblem of its strength. Its leafy top, blowing in the wind, is a striking vision. In the Middle Ages Lucca was crowded with about two hundred and fifty towers, which were all torn down or lopped within a few centuries. This tree-lined tower was the only exception, and still stands within its magnificent garden. The Guinigi family’s wishes came true in a way, as every year the warm season brings around a natural rebirth.

There are some places you can’t help but fall in love at first sight, Lucca is one of them. We should probably keep this one to ourselves, for it to stay one of the few Tuscan cities left without too many tourist (but we trust you guys to properly mesh with the locals) Just an hour from Florence, or forty five minutes from Pisa Airport hidden behind imposing 16th century walls there is this peaceful charming town, ideal for a day trip or a weekend away. Visit the amphitheater, the Duomo di San Martino (where you can find Tintoretto’s Last Supper) and the city’s other 99 churches, Puccini’s home,Palazzo Pfanner, Villa Reale, Villa Grabau, Villa Oliva and Villa Torrigiani.
