WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MIXING AND MASTERING?
Mixing is not mysterious judo. Go ahead and mix. Make bad mixes. Eventually, you’ll make good mixes.

WHERE ARE ALL THE FEMALE MUSIC PRODUCERS?
Billboard, one of the most influential magazines in music industry, has recently published a research about females in a music field. They found out that only 2% of all producers are women.
What do you you think can be the reason for such a major difference in gender representation?

Think about a singer singing quietly in the verse, and then belting it out in the chorus. The range between the quietest and loudest parts can often be as much as 20dB, which is a lot. especially when you're trying to balance it with a bunch of other elements. Like a very un-dynamic organ note. These dynamic swings can make it difficult to make everything fit together in a mix without imposing some kind of control on them.
----------
The idea behind this post is for you to understand the conceptual meaning of dynamics before you start manipulating them with a compressor. Feel free to share any other interesting mixing tips you have in the comments.

Don't Make These Mistakes! (Image by @cosmicacademy)
----------
The mix bus is for minor enhancements to your overall sound. If there is an 'issue', try to fix it at the source.
----------
EQ is often best placed at the start of a chain so the following plugins already have the correct sonic balance. For example, a compressor will react differently to a vocal with a ton of low-end energy.
----------
EQ adjustments should be made both in solo mode and whilst listening to the channel in the context of the whole mix. Staying in solo mode leads to an in-cohesive sound.
----------
Don't just aimlessly EQ. Have a sonic goal in mind.
----------
There are no rules, do what sounds good, even if it means a 'crazy' or dramatic EQ setting.
----------
Sometimes all you need is a gain change rather than to EQ. Want a brighter sound, try increasing the volume. Need to reduce the body? Try lowering the volume. Train your ear to know which is the right move.

EQ Concepts: The surgical Audio EQ

All good mixes have filters on most tracks. The idea behind this is for each track to have it’s own frequency space, so elements of the mix don’t clash with the low end. Every instrument is different, a tom drum is going to need an entirely different filter treatment than a Rhodes piano.

How steep do you cut your frequencies when you low pass or high pass, and why ? Share your thoughts in the comments.
