Manta rays hold a special place in my heart and have been on my "to carve & print" list for a while. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We met on my birthday (something like 10 years ago - and no, my birthday is not today). I just had obtained my diving certification a few days earlier, and there they were, these beautiful, large and gracious animals swimming all around us. Completely unexpected to see them (and even more unexpected to see them on both dives that day). I could not have asked for a better birthday present (actually the best I have received so far from our beautiful nature). What was your best or most unexpected birthday present? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am completely in love with the negative space on some of the prints. On one print it almost looks like an orchid. Last month, the Seychelles Manta Ray Project team published a paper about the movement patterns of reef manta rays in the Amirante Islands of Seychelles. In case you didn’t know, these rays are manta be great snorkelling buddies! @ashkaras swam with this giant #mantaray while cruising through the @gbrmarinepark near @orpheusisland, a private island just off the coast of @townsvillenorthqueensland. These majestic creatures’ wingspan can go up to seven metres, so it’s extra impressive when the males show off their acrobatic skills to compete for female attention.
