I often remind myself how lucky I am to live in a waterfront city.  In the summer I take every opportunity to be by or on the ocean.  Fortunately Salem has a few options for doing just that.  I took this video loop on a recent ride aboard @mahicruises where it seemed like we were almost racing @schoonerfame back to Pickering Wharf. . #lovewhereilive

This Victorian beauty in Marblehead, MA dates to 1871 and was originally owned by J.P. Harris. Its journey to becoming @hotelmarblehead has seen many owners, including a shoe box manufacturer, a leather merchant, and a lawyer. In 1997 it became the Marblehead Inn, and in 2011 it was purchased and reimagined as The Hotel Marblehead, a boutique hotel with a modern aesthetic that preserves its historic charm. It was the perfect base for my husband and me to explore all that Marblehead has to offer! It’s not often you stumble open an actual castle in the United States! We came across Carcassonne Castle on Marblehead Neck when we were visiting Castle Rock Park, right next door. It was constructed in 1935 by Lydia Pinkham Gove, granddaughter of Lydia Pinkham (inventor and marketer of an herbal-alcoholic “women’s tonic” for menstrual and menopausal problems, in case you were wondering). The castle was built during the Great Depression, and though the timing might seem a bit thoughtless (conspicuous consumption!) Gove actually received a commendation from FDR for putting many unemployed craftsmen to work. The granite was from the South Shore of MA, and wood and marble was imported from all over the world. The castle has three stories, 23 rooms, 11 baths, 7 fireplaces, a salt water pool and ocean views for days! #marbleheadneck

The lighting wasn’t the best for this photo, but how could I not take a shot of this fabulous home? This Federal house dates to 1803 and though the architecture is simple the details take it to the next level. What is your favorite feature? I have too many to list #marblehead
