Squirrel reunite update: the bad news is that, despite our best efforts, mom did not return to take any of the babies. The good news is, our lone orphan who has been with us for over two weeks now finally has siblings to grow up with! Reunite attempts were made the afternoon of the tree trimming and again for the following two days. That’s a lot of driving back and forth and time spent monitoring for our volunteer! The babies received supplemental fluids and feeds during this time, so they were kept in great health. They are currently being bottle fed every 4 hours and will be raised in foster care until they are old enough, and wild enough, to be released (roughly 6 weeks from now) back into the wild. Our first Mallard Duckling of the season has arrived! Patient #19-471 was found alone in Mill Valley. Many species of “orphaned” wildlife are actually mistakenly kidnapped by well-meaning rescuers (in which case we then take them back out to try to reunite them with their moms). However, in the case of Mallard Ducklings, they should never be without mom. She does not leave them once they hatch so if you ever see these fuzzy babies alone, there is no doubt they need to be rescued. What’s your favorite place(s) to hike in the Bay Area? ‍♂️‍♀️ With all of the beautiful weather we’ve been having here, and with everything still lush and green, it definitely feels like the perfect time to get out of the city and do day hikes! As far as this photo, last night I had a dinner date up in Marin, and arrived a bit early to explore the surrounding area. I went up the street a couple of blocks and discovered this view of San Francisco that I had never seen before, complete with sailboats! I will definitely find my way back and spend more time hiking and exploring the area, but next time with the proper hiking attire. Happy weekend to you and yours! _______________
