Video by @geosteinmetz on assignment for #LeFigaroMagazine Close-up of three week old fish in the world’s largest hatchery for farmed salmon, located at the head of a fjord in Norway. These salmon fry are dependent on an external food sack until they get old enough to feed. Water temperature has a major effect on their growth rate, and these infant fishes have their age measured in “temperature-days” (days x temp in centigrade). Welcome to one of the strange worlds I’m finding as I explore where our food comes from. #marineharvest
Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // Violations to the environment oftentimes are also violations to indigenous rights and ultimately to human rights. When it comes to standing up for what is right and proper in our relationship with nature, we have no better allies than First Nations, especially in British Columbia. As we begin documenting the devastating effects that Atlantic salmon fish farms are having on marine ecosystems in Canada, I delight in my new friendship with young leaders like @Tlalitlas_08, a young woman from the #Mugsgamaw Dzawada'enuwx First Nation, who has been occupying fish farms owned by #MarineHarvest for 75 days. These farms have been operating in tribal terrotory without consent from her people for over 30 years and they want fish farms out, so that the wild fish they depend on might return. To see and understand why she is taking on this fight, please #follow my #instagram feed at @CristinaMittermeier.

The sad truth about norwegian farmed fish!!! This is what people world wide eat, and believe it's exclusive and healthy. I could go on and on about whats wrong with this dirty business. But I'll just say the most important part: OUR WILD SALMON AND SEARUN BROWNTROUT ARE DYING. In a few years there will be nothing left to fish in our coast and fjords. This has to stop. We need to produce all farmed fish on land, or else many species will be extinct, and we don't have much time! #FarmedFishOnLandNOW #fåoppdrettenpåland #LukkedeannleggNÅ

It was fascinating to see the work that goes behind salmon farming in BC. I recently toured a salmon farm just off the coast of Vancouver Island. The experience sparked an interest to become more aware of my food sources.
It's summertime! When was the last time you visited the source of your food other than a u-pick berries spot? See @seawestnews to view the article
