A lot has changed in TWO exhausting, challenging, strengthening and fulfilling years. Pic 1 was 2 years ago, pic 2 is TODAY.
We used to have one small plot; now we have 2 large plots. We used to have a hobby garden; now we have a market farm. We used to date; now we’re married. And so much more. Happy TWO year work anniversary to us @ LAKE VALLEY FARMS.

Here’s an overdue #fridayintroductions
Hi, I’m Ann, owner and creative spirit behind Potager de la Planche.
Five fun facts about me:
1. I love mulching with fresh grass clippings, cuddling in plants knowing that foraging the field prevented weeds from going to seed, the mulch keeps new ones from germinating, it helps retain moisture, acts as a fertilizer and is a superb way to improve the soil. Very therapeutic.
2. My favorite animals are sheep cause they’re adorable and awesome to be around. Still missing my Gutefår herd 15 years later.
3. I’m daringly saying trilingual in Swedish, English and French, but of course not without a good amount of errors here and there. I’ve come to terms with that I’m not a polyglot and that’s ok.
4. My two beautiful boys had a blast this week playing on a rain puddled tarp. Not surprisingly, one fell and got completely soaked, soon followed by his brother and then lots of laughter. I ignored being an adult who insists on going home to change, instead they played for a good 30 min (not summer yet), alternating between puddles and grass clipping piles To be on the safe side a hot bath and warm soup came next.
Did I mention that I’m Swedish and grew up with Pippi Longstocking as a role model...
5. I have no clue where to look when taking a phone selfie - no matter what, my eyes won’t look straight in the camera. This was best out of 8 tries #photographerneeded
How now #30! Our small herd of Dexter cattle still possess their horns, but they are friendly as can be. (Just don’t be standing broadside when they swing to shoo a fly!) I love watching them this time of year when mornings are foggy and everything is impossibly green; it’s easy to envision them roaming their ancestral home in the Irish countryside, majestic horns crowning their heads.

. Some years ago, when we decided to move back to #Virginia and farm, we had a vague vision and a desire for a farm system capable of producing nourishing food while nourishing the land itself and leaving our patch of earth a little better than we found it.
For us, this vision always included livestock. Properly and consciously managed livestock can be an incredible force for good turning humble grass into a self-sustaining circle of life- providing fertility, sinking carbon, increasing biomass, biodiversity, and the water retaining ability of soils. Would it be easier to just run a market garden or just be in the livestock business? Without a doubt. Would we have done things differently from the beginning knowing what we know now about trying to balance the labor demands of doing both? Probably, but I think we would have gotten to the point of diversification eventually no matter which path we took to get there.

Quick eats after a cycle out to Dollymount today. Falafel with organic avocado and @marketgnomes Spring Salad + Scarlet Scallion & a homemade balsamic glaze and hummus It tastes even better because I know the salad was harvested just up the road in Glasnevin with no chemicals (and is available at Small Changes)!
And just like that, our CSA is full for the 2019 season!
We’ve really be blown away by how amazing this community is. To be able to grow nutrient-dense, organic food on our little acre and a half for people who will genuinely appreciate our hard work and long days in the field—it means everything.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and it means exactly that: a local farm supported by the very community it feeds. Small organic farms don’t benefit from government subsidies like large industrial farms do, so it’s the CSA model that allows us to build a life around farming.
So thank you to all our new and returning CSA members! And if you didn’t snag a spot, you can join our waitlist just in case and, of course, always taste what we’re up to at the farmers markets all season long!
