3/31/1863 — The Jesuits . In the beginning, there were 2️⃣ major opposing factors. . First was the Brahmin’s hostility to Catholicism. . As more and more Irish immigrants started arriving in the City Upon a Hill, Boston’s elite — who controlled the corridors of power —were desperate to hold onto their influence. The last thing they wanted was a Catholic college ⛪️. . Second was the dirty water’s distance from Maryland , which had served as Jesuit America’s HQ for more than 200 years. With Georgetown firmly established on the Potomac ever since 1789 , why would respected Jesuit academics ship up to Boston , whose Puritan magistrates had only recently lifted the Commonwealth’s ban on Catholics? . Even so, Benedict Joseph Fenwick fought for the academic institution he envisioned . . The 43-year-old Marylander had taken over as the second Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston in 1825, and he immediately set his sights on a “College in the City of Boston” that would prepare the next generation of Jesuit leaders . This classroom out of the basement of his church, he believed, would breathe new life into Boston’s Society of Jesus . Unfortunately for Fenwick, those opposing factors persisted as he tried to recruit Jesuit instructors to join his start-up school . So disgusted with the discrimination on Beacon Hill was Joey that in 1843, he fled to Worcester to start the College of the Holy Cross . A couple years later, the Eagles’ fumble was recovered by the Irish-born John McElroy . Fresh off service in the Mexican-American War, the 64-year-old McElroy had come to Boston to lead the St. Mary’s parish in the North End — and to revitalize the vision for the school . In addition to profiting off his role in the slave trade , McElroy established in the South End the college that Fenwick had pictured . . Nearly 4️⃣ decades after its inception, today in Boston, 1863, Boston College finally got its charter from the boys on Beacon Hill . . Today, @bostoncollege educates over 9,300 full-time undergrads every year and nearly 5,000 grad students
