The things some of us worry about are insignificant to most, but they are things that we(chronic illness) individuals tend to get caught up wishing weren’t issues that we cared about too much but can’t help. Some medications cause a multitude of side effects, most are manageable, some are temporary and some are persisting. Some of these side effects just affect appearance and vanity. These are quite common in the post transplant side of life. 1️⃣. Hair. My hair started to fall out and thin last spring. Handfuls of hair and just hair on my clothes and hair touching my arms that I couldn’t find, for weeks and months. My hair is now very thin, and I can’t do much with it. It has now since started to grow back with the help of a few things. 2️⃣. Moon face. This occurs from the amount of steroids we were on right in the beginning of receiving our transplants. It’s when your face gets very full, and puffy looking, kind of like a chipmunk. It’s not permanent, but It can persist for a very long time. Luckily my face only blew up for the first 6 months and went back down. For others It doesn’t go away that fast. It can be quite frustrating to see your face and not recognize It from what you used to look like. 3️⃣. Skin. With the amount of new drugs and changes your body goes through, skin will often breakout. When you aren’t used to that It can take a hit to your confidence. This also luckily was only around for a short period of time. 4️⃣. Nails. My nails are complete shit. They are weak and they break and the peel very easily. They also grow at a snails pace. 5️⃣. Thinning of the skin. I now bruise easier. So now I am usually covered in bruises and look like I was thrown down some stairs. I also get burnt easier and am more susceptible to skin cancer. No tanning allowed, for those who like being tan.
I can live with all those self image type issues because it’s so insignificant and it’s the result of being able to breathe. Self image and how you see yourself is very important to a lot of people, not just females but males as well. They’re petty things that most people sick or not worry about. So just be thankful you don’t have bigger issues to worry about.
