And for the first time in a very long time I used a needle to try and mend it because of what I just learned. - If I threw this shirt out it could end up in a landfill where it could take hundreds of years to break down. If I tried to recycle or donate it, it could instead end up in a country like Kenya where it’s sold for profit and as a result contributes to destroying that country’s textile industry. We’re also flooding those countries with our rejects, and when they can’t sell them, they’re stuck with the waste. The situation is so bad that some African countries tried to ban our second-hand clothing from coming in, but the U.S. threatened retaliation. - Our overconsumption is killing the planet and harming people in the process. I’m only smiling because I know we can do better. And because I’m grateful that my job allows me to learn about these things, share them, and keep those in power accountable. These brokers sell some of it to developing countries for dirt cheap. Happy National @opshopweek, fashionistas! • I’ve been on a quiet personal journey towards being a more responsible fashion consumer. As a lover of clothing and creative expression through it, it’s no easy feat, even defining what “responsible consumption” means to me is ever evolving. I’m very much still a work in progress and I give myself that permission. • Earlier in the year I was reflecting on my role as a fashion consumer in an interview with the amazingly kind and generous @mrspress (article link in bio). I realised that being a responsible consumer is in my DNA. It’s the culture I was raised in, both in my childhood in Tanzania and my life here in Sydney. We used things, then recycled and upcycled until their dying breath. Waste was (is) always carefully considered. Even to this day, my father is a chronic hoarder of things because of his strong aversion to waste. • When I migrated to Australia as young girl, my cousins took me to the second-hand (#mitumba) markets for “new” outfits to bring with me. I was so excited about my new wardrobe!! It was the norm. I very rarely wore brand new clothes. When I did, they were tailor-made. • So it’s ironic that over time, being in the diaspora, my capacity increasing, my values shifted and I attributed that to “progress.” • Like most things, it’s personal and it’s political. I’m slowly remembering who I am and the incredible lineage of resourceful people I belong to. I’m returning home. • My love for op-shopping and vintage shopping has been rekindled. It such an amazing way to find truly unique things, to stretch the lifespan of a garment (the stats for Aussie fashion consumption are staggering!), to be more responsible. I love how it stretches my creativity. I love how it relieves me from the homogeneous pull of fast-fashion. • This year, I’ve loved wearing #preloved clothes to mark special occasions - a wedding, my birthday celebrations and a charity fundraiser. To elevate and celebrate these garments. To weave new life and stories into them. • It feels good to belong to this community and I’m looking forward to growing more in it. Niwa
