My New Naija Friends
—————
If I see you and you are from West Africa, you can guarantee I’ll be striking up a conversation to hear your story
—————
After I returned from living in West Africa for 2 years I took a job as a door to door sales rep in Northwest Arkansas. One Saturday night after work my wife and I went to Golden Corral. I remember it like it was yesterday... I was getting some pineapple from the fruit bar and I accidentally bumped into a man from West Africa. I apologized and with a big grin and jovial laugh told me not to worry about it. My heart soared as it had been almost a year since I had seen another West African
—————
I was more timid and shy than I am now and I didn’t dare ask where he was from. I went and sat back down by my wife and watched him go sit by himself in the corner to finish eating. I longed to know his story. My wife could sense my distraction and asked me what was going on.
—————-
Before I could talk myself out of it I invited him to come sit with me and my wife and finish eating. I grilled him with questions, told him about my experience in West Africa and asked him what his plans were. It felt like it always does when I meet someone from any West African country... like I’d known him my whole life ❤️
————-
He told me he had driven there that night because he was going to attend church in a city called Bentonville and didn’t want to have to get up so early... I asked him where he was staying... he said he planned on getting a room and staying at a hotel.
——————
So I did what any of you would have done for me... without permission from my wife I invited him to stay at my apartment that night I didn’t know it at the time but my wife thought I had lost my mind. Why would I invite a stranger into my home to spend the night she asked My response: he isn’t a stranger.
——————
Sure enough he followed us home and he and I watched a film, ate a handful of frozen popsicles and talked late into the night...
————-
The next morning he got up and showered, got dressed, and thanked me for my kindness. I haven’t seen that man since that day and I probably never will but i felt like I got as much (REST IN COMMENTS BELOW)
