My Optical Illusion Mosaic Triptych “The Universe” is complete! ⠀ Here are some inetersting facts about it: ⠀ 1. The idea of making Mosaics in Optical Illusion style came to me during a yoga class in Thailand; ⠀ 2. Designs for the triptych pieces were found on Pinterest (originals are unknown); ⠀ 3. All 3 pieces took me about 1,5 years to complete. I am a “nap-time artist” and can work 1,5 hours a day max when my little one is napping; ⠀ 4. The triptych was started in Alabama, continued in Georgia and finished in Colorado. Yes, within a year our family moved 3 times (now I am an expert in packing/unpacking boxes); ⠀ 5. I used ceramic tiles that can be found at an ordinary hardware store. By some reason my store was always running out of black ones, so at some point I just bought a whole box of them and now have an impressive stock of black tiles in my studio; ⠀ 6. I used approximately 6570 tile pieces for all 3 mosaics; ⠀ 7. Tile cutting process was quite a pain:). For the first 2 mosaics I used a manual cutting device which crumpled tiles a lot. I could use only about 1/3 of the total cut. Then I decided to invest in a tile wet saw, which made the slicing process much easier but the machine “ate” ages of the tiles, was extremely loud and left big mess in the studio. Now I prefer working with stained glass:); ⠀ 8. For the base I used a wooden board that was made for shower walls. This type of board is very strong but still quite thin (about 1/4 inch); ⠀ 9. I used Zbar hanging method for all 3 pieces to ensure their maximum safety (slide to the left to see the Zbar system). Unfortunately, as I found out later, this hanging method isn’t allowed by most of the galleries, so I don’t know if my triptych ever goes for public display; ⠀ 10.
