There truly is nothing like a Mothers love. It cracks you open to the core. Makes you open your hands to the sky in gratitude and some days in mercy. It teaches you about your capacity for love, for kindness and where you MUST heal. The greatest gift ever and a responsibility felt like no other. It is so massive that words can barely describe the never endingness of this offering to life. I give so much honour and respect today to my own Mother for traversing the path and offering me the best of her love. I give thanks to my entire Mother-line for all the efforts of love that brought me into being. And here I am now as Mother to my darling girl. Just me and her. TOGETHER. BLESSED. I love her infinitely. Motherhood has been and continues to be an initiation like I have never known. I am so grateful to have her by my side to inspire and most days push me to being a better more whole and conscious version of myself. She is my greatest teacher. I endeavor to savor each and every moment, as it goes so fast. Look at that little squishy face! I pray that all Mothers be seen and supported in kind for their tremendously important service to life and our planet! I am going on a journey myself with crystal and sound healing to release a lot of anger I hold in my womb that is not mine. Potting-up ancestral Honeysuckle today at my aunt’s My great great grandmother, Tessia Pappianou, immigrated to the US in the early 1900’s from Kalamata, Greece with her husband and their 6 children, including my great grandmother, Vasiliki. They bought a farm in New Bedford, MA and Tessia planted a Honeysuckle vine there that Vasiliki took cuttings from, and it has been passed down through the generations ever since. In the second picture (circa 1940’s) Tessia is seated on the bottom right and Vasiliki is on the upper left holding my mom’s cousin Cleo, and my great aunt Alec is on the right. These women It’s so powerful and healing to finally be planting some of this ancestral vine at my home. È stata mia nonna a farmi dono di questo cimelio. Non me lo aspettavo, mi sono emozionata. Avere un oggetto creato a mano da un antenato significa essere in presenza della sua energia, dei suoi pensieri, delle sue memorie, perché tutto questo rimane incastrato nel tessuto o nel materiale quando l'oggetto prende vita. Non ho avuto il piacere di conoscere la mia bisnonna; adesso però non solo so che una parte di lei (e di ogni mia antenata sulla linea materna) è sempre con me all'interno del mio DNA mitocondriale, ma so anche che un'altra parte di lei, più sottile, sarà con me ogni volta che avrò la sua coperta a contatto con il mio corpo. Motherline Birthing and Blessing:: Many suns ago my mother traveled a darkened road through the redwood forests, the waxing moon slipping through the trees. How many stories begin with birth? With blessing? The ancestors gather, the norns and disir draw close. We prepare their porridge and pray in reciprocal nourishment. :: Birth is liminal. A rite of passage for both mother and child. You are never the same after, and there is a grief in this, a loss, like in all passages. The difference between a life transition and a rite of passage is that there is no return from the latter. You are always a mother, whatever happens to your child. You have always been born, whether you live or die. Other rites include transforming from child to adult, from adult to elder, from unmarried to married, from married to divorced, from living to dead. You traverse the channel, you are changed. :: Hail to the ancestors, for they knew the way to integrate these passages. Ronald Grimes says in his book Deeply into the Bone that unattended rites of passage form holes in us where energy leaks and ghosts slip through. When we claim and create rites of passage, understand their initiatory power, we become more than the echoing product of a consumer culture with its emphasis on ascension and linearity. Ritual processes are spirals, move us in and out of time, weave and spin with the Norns and Disír, the guardians present at our birth. Never again in our life will we be joined as we are in that moment, to a passage so simultaneous as that of mother and child. And it is the universal connector, the binding of humanity, emergence from the womb, the claim of life. :: In this my forty-third year I honor my mother, and my mother's mother, who held me in her womb as the seed story of an egg in my mother's ovary, as my daughter was held in my ovary within my mother's womb. Together we form a story of passage. It is the story of time and timelessness, this beauty, this faith, the sacred story of a ceremony older than art.
