Very steep meadows still have to be cut by hand. This means a lot of hard work for all the farmers. Have you ever cut hay?

Did you mow your new prairie yet?
Maintenance mowing through the first growing season will prevent quick-growing weeds from excessively shading the slow-growing perennials. Mowing is a necessary step to prevent weeds from taking hold in a newly planted prairie. Ideally, mow each time vegetation growth reaches 8-10 inches, and cut back to a height of 5 inches (or the highest setting on your mower). Don't let the vegetation get too tall, or the clippings will mulch and smother the plants underneath.
Mowing as a weed management strategy is recommended over hand weeding because pulling up plants will disturb the soil, and thus the germinating seeds and tender roots of newly sprouted seedlings. Not to mention juvenile plant identification can be quite tricky! You don't want to accidentally pull out desirable plants.
Weed control is critical during the first few years of a newly planted native plant community. Persistence is key; stay on top of the weeds!

Gus smacked me in the face tonight before bed. Earlier in the day when I asked him what mommy was good at, he responded, “eating.” But he did help me mow the yard, which is pretty incredible cross training. And, if you want to try it, I have a kid and lawnmower that I’m willing to loan out #gustagram #toddlermoments #mowing #mowingseason #multitasking #boymom #twoandahalf #momlife #realparenting #trainingforlife #crosstraining #exerciseathome #thisismygym #exercisewithkids
