The Sikh Dastaar (or turban) is more than just a head covering. It is a symbol of Sikhism and allows Sikhs to stand out to represent our religion It represents faith and alludes that everyone is equal, there is no one higher or lower because we are all the same. In addition to that, turbans are core pillars of the Sikh identity, they signify our religion and one of the most sacred parts in Sikhism is to cover your head in religious spaces or in public. As many of you know, one of the 5 K’s in Sikhi is Kesh, which means uncut hair. As someone who practices Sikhism or identifies Amritdhari (an initiated Sikh) hair is extremely sacred as it should not be cut and it should be covered. The Sikh turban is an integral piece of the Sikh identity and I wanted to showcase that through my art. By learning, people can get a taste of why Sikhs where turbans, but also recognize how sacred they really are. Brands like Gucci rip off the Sikh identity by reducing the turban to just a fashion statement. Laws like Bill 21 in Quebec, Canada, restrict Sikhs, among many other groups, from showcasing their religious wear and symbols. As this is an important topic to be covered, not a lot of people explain the significance of the Sikh Turban. I hope that brands and laws can understand why this is so important and realize that reducing or restricting religion will break society. Rather than of uplifting each other, these brands and laws bring people down and that’s just not right. By learning, we can help one another and bring awareness.

O dadinho de tapioca estava maravilhoso! Bem crocante por fora e com o queijo esticando por dentro. Acompanhava uma geleia de pimenta com laranja super saborosa. . . A feijoada era completinha e muito bem servida com bastante carne, arroz, vinagrete, laranja, couve refogada e farofa. Muito bem temperada! . . E para finalizar um quindim divino. Fazia tempo que não comia um tão gostoso assim. Super macio e com um crocante de coco por baixo. . . E o melhor é o valor: TUDO isso por R$45,00. Thank you so much to everyone for all the birthday wishes!! y’all really know how to make a girl feel loved I’ve always loved sharing my birthday with Juneteenth and even though I wasn’t born in the south , I was raised in the south and was lucky enough to study history and cultural studies at UT. Black , Latino and World History to be exact. This makes me proud. And soulful . I love being a Gemini and this year was extra special because I got to celebrate my sister Carol , also a Gemini , on Isla Mujeres just a few weeks ago . Let’s just say we celebrated mine early too . It’s funny because I’ve seen some incredible beaches all around the world , literally , and I left thinking “why go any where else when we have Mexico !? Mexico lindo “ Because being bilingual isn’t enough and I’m trying to stay true to my Euro / French roots as well, I’ve been studying French at the Alliance Français of Austin the last 8 months and was so excited to celebrate my birthday dinner at one of the oldest and best French restaurants in town, Chez Nous I hadn’t been there in at least over 10 years and thrilled they are still around .
