Detail of the 'Baldishol Tapestry,' probably made in Norway in the late twelfth century and now in the The National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design in Oslo. What survives of the Baldishol Tapestry is only a fragment of the original frieze, which probably measured over twelve meters in length. The surviving section depicts scenes representing the months of April (not shown) and May: a mounted horseman with a kite-shield, spear, and a Norman helmet with its distinctive nose-guard. The tapestry is named after the church where it was found in the nineteenth century.⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ #repost @middle_ages_history⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ #medieval #medievalart #medievalhistory #history #art #arthistory #historyofart #knight #chevalier #tapestry #twelfthcentury #middleages #moyenage #medioevo #edadmedia #mittelalter #horse #horseart #textileart #textiles #medievaltimes #medievalworld #medievalhistory #medievalwar #medievalstyle #nasjonalmuseet #norway #oslo⠀⠀

Left: Stripy blue and white silk dress with navy details, ca. 1912. The dress has a big bow in the back (swipe), as a gentle hint to Japanese kimono style with obi belt. But it also conveys the love for maritime fashion and seaside resorts. The dress comes from an unknown Norwegian maker, and is today in the care of The National Museum in Oslo (OK-16321). . Right: Another Kodak Girl out and about with her camera. The ad is from ca. 1915 (hard to find exact dates and owners online, for some reason). #kodakgirl #seasidefashion #edwardianfashion #dresshistory #historicalfashion #1910sfashion #kodak #kunstindustrimuseet #nasjonalmuseet #nasjonalmuseetplus #vintagedress

Queen Sonja of Norway was born on this day in 1937. ✨ In that context, here is a glimpse of her official attires from 1968 and until the 1990s. When becoming crown princess in 1968, much of her representation attires were made by legendary Molstad in Oslo. They also fitted her with Balmain models. When Molstad closed, Balmain appears more frequently in her wardrobe, and especially the designs of Erik Mortensen. Apart from multiple gala gowns, he was also the one to design the queen's concecration attire worn when she became queen Sonja in 1991. The queen has been sure to donate selected official garments to then Kunstindustrimuseet, now a part of The National Museum in Oslo. The selection is nicely curated, with items worn at important moments - attires that might be a part of the collective Norwegian conscience. Her official wardrobe reveals a sure fashion sense and a love for bold colours and details. The dresses also always seem sculpted from all angles, often with diagonal details to create a sense of movement. Here's some favourites, with dress photos from The National Museum, and photos of the queen from NTB Scanpix. #queensonja #dronningsonja #royalfashion #molstad #balmain #erikmortensen #mayaubert #gudbjørgpetlund #galagown #galadress #kunstindustrimuseet #nasjonalmuseet #nasjonalmuseetplus

Full view of the c. 1720s mantua made of green "imitated lace" brocade. This style of fabric was a speciality of Lyon, and the fabric was probably made there, while the actual sewing of the attire is believed to have been done in Norway. This extant mantua consists of three pieces: the main skirt with sewn-in pocket, the golden stomacher, and then the mantua-dress itself. There would likely be rich white lace peaking out at the sleeves and necklines originally. These were often a part of the shift worn underneath and hence they haven't survived with the dress. The mantua is, according to tradition, a wedding dress from Bergen, Western Norway. Today it's in the care of The National Museum in Oslo (OK-dep-01160). #mantua #manteau #1720sfashion #baroquefashion #historicalfashion #lyonsilk #kunstindustrimuseet #nasjonalmuseet #norskmotehistorie

All the photos in the world can't prepare you for the sparkle that is queen Maud's pink and gold gala gown, used in connection with the crown prince marriage in March 1929. The dress was made by British Blancquaert and consist of two quite different layers - a pink silk underdress, and a golden lace layer with bead embroidery of pearls and golden beads. This, combined with the sun ray pattern, creates a glittering, rich and ever-changing surface. ✨ The dress is currently on display at #dronningmøter at The Royal Palace in Oslo, courtesy of Nasjonalmuseet (OK-1991-0167). #dronningmaud #queenmaud #maudofwales #blancquaert #1920sfashion #dresshistory #historicalfashion #detkongeligeslott #slottet #kunstindustrimuseet #nasjonalmuseet #prettyinpink
