Choosing your authenticity and what feels right for you is all that matters. People pleasing is an epidemic both in terms of us practicing it and in terms of us expecting it. Transfer to riding? — First time trying reverse-round-pen with a rider and... yay!! This is Draumur’s 4th ride in a year. (probably his 10th ride in the past TWO years) — But its really happening this time — Everyone has their own approach to “transfer it to riding”... and mine is the “laziest”. — I just do what I always do, but a few weeks before riding, I start putting the saddle on for “ground play”, to make sure they can still do All The Things. Then comes weights in the saddle for a couple weeks. Then (hopefully) a tiny rider. If the horse can do their movements with weight in the saddle, then the “heavier” rider is the next test. — The big issue for us is almost NEVER the physical part — everything we do on the ground is designed to help the horse carry the rider without sacrificing self-carriage, and more important, with NO “drive and restrain”. The goal (not quite there yet) is they move in riding as they do in liberty. (Which is why we care about their spine so much). — But the real challenge is how to *communicate* with the horse. Most good +R trainers are much better at their cues than we are... we just first want them to MOVE and most important — ENJOY it . We don’t even really need “whoa” working well, because the click is the most powerful whoa ‍♀️. But the horse still needs to know what to do, where to go, *if* we don’t yet have rein/seat cues tuned up. (We are lazy like that ‍♀️). — Ahhhh reverse-round pen is now officially my favorite transfer-to-riding thing ever. No steering required. He knows the game. He even knows when to speed up and when to do which gait (mostly). It’s already a habit, and a rider on board was No Big Deal. — That said, he was a bit confused over WHO he should pay attention to — person in middle (me) or rider (Carrie) . But he had a *great* attitude. Some tail swishing for sure, but for the formerly grumpy, energy-saver horse... and pushing 20... he’s stepping up to the challenge! — That said, I still made Carrie ride this first . She’s fearless and enjoys speed so... I make her test the new riding areas. But he had *almost* no struggle keeping his spine stable, base of neck up. He’s my hero ‍♂
