The 1775 Arney's Mount Friends' Meeting House near Columbus, #NewJersey. Adjacent to the meeting house is the burial ground. This is the oldest meeting house without interior partitions in the region that is still in use. No electricity, formal heating, or plumbing has ever been installed. According to oral tradition, Samuel Smith was the builder. Local bog iron stone was used to construct the outer walls. Arney’s Mount suffered two fires in the early 1800s. The first was 1800 and the second was 1809. The second fire nearly destroyed the building except for its stone walls. The building was occasionally used from 1871 to 1898 and not used at all from 1898 until the meeting's revival in 1941. The 1891 Michael Majerus House on 9th Avenue S. is considered St. Cloud’s finest example of Second Empire architecture although at the time of build, more Queen Anne or Richardsonian Romanesque were more popular, then. Speculation was Majerus, like many of the German-American residents of Minnesota, still romanticized this style even a decade after its height of popularity. Architect was Theodore Kevenhoerster. The exterior remains virtually unchanged since its completion 128 years ago. Now that the windows have been taken apart, thoroughly cleaned and put back together, I can finally enjoy the pretty view of our backyard! We have neglected these windows since we first moved here, just other things that needed our attention more. Believe it or not, the whole process took us almost 3 hours!!!! And included Joe precariously positioned on a ladder about 12 feet from the ground. I have always kept the blinds in those windows shut, but now I don’t have to! I went to Owosso for work the other day, so of course I stopped by my favorite Michigan castle. I even got some interior pics. (7 shots total) Curwood Castle was built as a writing studio for author James Oliver Curwood, who clearly had a lot of imagination. It was built in 1922 and it's on the National Register of Historic Places. Construction began in 1907 for a modest summer retreat, which Sleeper designed in collaboration with a local architect, Halfdan M. Hanson. Over the next 27 years, the house evolved into a gabled and turreted labyrinth of some 40 rooms filled with vast collections of American and European objects, arranged by Sleeper into compositions of color, light, and evocative meaning. Billings Administration Building, Johns Hopkins Hospital Location: 601 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21205 Built: 1889 Architect: Johann Rudolph Neirnsee, Dr. John Shaw Billings & Edward Clarke Cabot & Francis Ward Chandler (Cabot and Chandler) In 1867, a Quaker merchant from Baltimore, arranged for the incorporation of The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and for the appointment of a board of trustees for each. He died in 1873, leaving $7 million to be divided equally between the two institutions, at the time the largest philanthropic bequest in U.S. history. The trustees obtained the services of four outstanding physicians, known as the "Big Four”. They were pathologist William Henry Welch, surgeon William Stewart Halsted, internist William Osler, and gynecologist Howard Atwood Kelly. The Billings Administration Building is one of the original hospital structures on campus. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Initial plans for the hospital were created by surgeon John Shaw Billings with the architectural design by John Rudolph Niernsee. It was completed by architect and painter, Edward Clarke Cabot of Cabot and Chandler. When completed it cost $2,050,000. Neirnsee was partnered with James Crawford Neilson (Niernsee & Nielson), forming an incredibly talented and prolific team.
