On the weekends, we’ve made it a point to go on “adventures” with the kiddos. They’re not extravagant or complicated—we just drive somewhere and spend the day exploring, chowing, and laughing together. Today we had a jam-packed day in the East Bay. First, we visited Henry’s grandma and then headed to the cemetery to honor our ancestors with my in-laws for the annual Qingming festival. During Qingming, Chinese families visit the tombs of their dearly departed to clean the gravesites, bow to their ancestors, and make ritual offerings of food & paper money. Afterwards, because we were already near Berkeley, we decided to explore our old stomping grounds with the boys. (@fitbomb and I met at @ucberkeleyofficial over 26 years ago!) Although we never have a set plan for our weekend adventures, I’m always in charge of finding places to eat with #glutenfree options. I take this role very seriously. For today’s lunch, we went to @hawkingbirdoak, and everyone loved it (even picky Ollie and the in-laws)! The gluten-free fried chicken salad was amazing! I knew that @kimchee_jeanius was having a pop-up at @thirdculturebakery so that was next on our agenda! @ojeanius handcrafts paleo-friendly kimchee and I’m glad I was finally able to snag a couple of jars today. It was also fab catching up with her main squeeze, @cheftudavidphu. Man, the gluten-free donuts and treats at @thirdculturebakery are BEYOND. They’re made with mochiko rice flour so they have a pleasantly toothsome chew. Plus, the technicolor glazes are just the right amount of sweetness. If I lived closer, I’d be in big trouble. Next, we wandered aimlessly around Emeryville and Berkeley. Sometimes no plans are the best plans! For dinner, we stopped at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, @nido510, and shared a bunch of flavorful plates. My heart and belly are definitely full.
