T H E F I R S T T I M E I T R I E D F A U X T E C H N I Q U E - Udoka Uju [Swipe] I worship at RCCG Canaan Land, I used to go church jejely and try not to be noticed in church. But some how someone got to know I was The Lady Painter. When my church was going through some renovations for an event in 2016, I didn't approach them for painting contract because I didnt have much experience, I saw my church as being too big for me to handle and I was just about a few mo this into the painting business. So I somehow got the job to paint my church. I really didn't have a complete idea of what I wanted to do. I started with painting some of the pillar gold and texturized it, and then one Sunday the elders in the church called me to tell me that the gold was too much. I felt stuck cos I didnt know what to do with the gold pillars. The next day I mixed 3 colours, I picked up a small brush and started brushing it over the gold pillars. They saw it, liked it and I got the go ahead to proceed with other pillars. The pictures here shows the before, during and after the painting. It is one experience I am grateful for having, thanks to those who continue to believe in me and my team. In 1984 I began studying painting with African/Native American painter Richard Mayhew during my PhD work at PSU. This painting is a work from that first fall semester. A man of few words and a warm wit, Richard saw me struggling with something in my work and quietly invited me to ditch my tube of Payne’s Grey and instead experiment with a limited colourist rather than tonal palette. A couple of cadmium yellows & reds, alizarin crimson, French ultramarine, cerulean & manganese blue & titanium white. That was nearly 35 years ago.
