DESTRUCTION OF THE IPATIEV HOUSE IN THE 1970s: During years, the House of Ipatiev, which was built in the 1880s, became a "museum of the revolution", an "anti-religious museum", center of the Ateia Society Council, the Regional Archives of the Party and the office of the Rector of the University Communist Ural-Siberian. The walls exhibited rows of portraits of Bolshevik leaders. Posters and diagrams hailed the glory of communism, showing that a much larger number of tractors, airplanes, and tons of steel that had been produced in Stalin's day than at the time of the Tsar Nicholas II. A room upstairs was dedicated to the Romanovs, with short excerpts of Nicholas diary, of Alexei diary and the front page of a newspaper in Ekaterinburg with the headline: "Executing Nicholas, the bloodthirsty murder - shot without bourgeois formalities, but in accordance with our democratic principles”. The basement, where the imperial family was murdered, was not part of the museum and was full of old boxes stacked up to the ceiling. In 1977, KGB director, Yuri Andropov, convinced President Leonid Brezhnev that the House of Ipatiev had become a place of pilgrimage of incognito monarchists. Because of this, a Kremlin order was issued to the First Secretary of the Sverdlovsk Region, Boris Yeltsin, to destroy the house. PIERRE GILLIARD: THE TUTOR OF THE ROMANOV CHILDREN: Pierre Gilliard was a Swiss academic and author, best known as the French language tutor to the five children of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia from 1905 to 1918. In 1921, after the Russian Revolution of 1917, he published a memoir, “Thirteen Years at the Russian Court”, about his time with the family. In his memoirs, Gilliard described the Tsarina Alexandra's torment over her son's haemophilia and her faith in the ability of starets Grigori Rasputin to heal the boy. Gilliard was born on 16 May 1879 in Fiez, Switzerland and, initially, he came to Russia in 1904 as a French tutor to the family of Duke George of Leuchtenberg, a cousin of the Romanov family. He was recommended as a French tutor to the Tsar's children and began teaching the elder children, the Grand Duchesses Olga and Tatiana Nikolaevna of Russia in 1905. He grew fond of the family and followed them into internal exile at Tobolsk, Siberia, following the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Bolsheviks prevented Gilliard from joining his pupils when they were moved to the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg in May 1918. When Maria was born, her father wrote in his diary: "A happy day: the Lord sent us a third daughter - Mary - who was safely born at 12:10am.
