This might be the first rooftop I ever hit. I have had this picture in an envelope for almost 30 years and just scanned it today. I hit this spot around the time I got into KRS, so it must have been around early 1993. On Mother’s Day of 1992, I got hit by a car on the 5 Freeway where it crosses over Van Nuys in #Pacoima, while running from the police with Tolse, Arest, and another member of TUGK, Smoke. After getting hit I was laid up with a cast on my leg for months. During that time, Tolse got into another crew and was eventually killed by some guy from Pacoima just a few blocks from where I got hit and near where he and Arrest had saved my life. (I tell this story in detail in my book, Going All City, coming out later this year). So, climbing up on this rooftop was a big deal for me since I was still barely able to move my left foot and I had not been out of the house for ages. (To this day, my left ankle is stiffer than the right ankle). Like those cars parked down below, my letters are pretty junky and old, but after so many years seem almost cool and sort of vintage. This roof top was crazy because the roof of the building adjoining the one with my letters is actually recessed, so I had to stand on a ledge to do this. The spot was also crazy for me since TUGK had had beef with MCP (Mexicans Causing Panic) for a while because of something Seren had gotten into. Anyway, this spot was right in their hood. (As far as gangs go, this was Barrio Van Nuys’s (BVN) hood, but crews have hoods too, and for writers like me and the other guys from TUGK, this was MCP’s hood and sat right on the RTD’s 420 bus line that they and MWA in Hollywood controlled at the time). After getting hit on that freeway, Tolse, Arrest, and Other from TUGK got into one crew, while Lyric, Bet, and I got into KRS. This was one of the reasons KRS battled soon after I hit this spot, which I also write about in my book.
